The LORD Cleanses and Restores Us

God Calls Us to Confess Our Sins

Beloved in the Lord! Let us now draw near with humble hearts and confess our sins to God, our Father, imploring Him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us forgiveness:
Have mercy upon me, O God,

According to Your lovingkindness. Psalm 51:1a According to the multitude of Your tender mercies, Blot out my transgressions. Psalm 51:1b Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, And in sin my mother conceived me. Psalm 51:5 Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, And cleanse me from my sin. Psalm 51:2

We Respond by Confessing Our Sins (kneel if able)

Most merciful God, we confess that we are in bondage to sin and cannot free ourselves. We have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed; by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. For the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways, to the glory of your holy name. Amen.

  • God Assures Us of Forgiveness in Christ
Pastor: It is my privilege to declare to you the forgiveness of all your sins, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Congregation: Amen!

The LORD Consecrates Us by His Word and Prayer

Pastor: Lift up your hearts.

Congregation: We lift them up to the Lord!

Pastor: Let us render thanks to the Lord our God

Congregation: It is proper and right to do so.

Pastor: Truly it is proper and right that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to you, O Lord, Holy Father, Almighty, and Everlasting King…Therefore with angels and archangels, with all the company of heaven, and with the church gathered on earth, we laud and magnify your glorious Name, evermore praising you and singing together: Sing the Sanctus (facing page)

The Reading of the Law: Luke 6:27-36

But I say to you who hear: Love your enemies,
Do good to those who hate you.
	Bless those who curse you,
And pray for those who spitefully use you.
To him who strikes you on one cheek,
		Offer the other also.
And from him who takes away your cloak,
Do not withhold your tunic either.
Give to everyone who asks of you. And from him who takes away your goods,
		Do not ask them back.
And just as you want men to do to you,
You also do to them likewise,
But if you love those who love you, what credit is that to you?
For even sinners love those who love them.
And if you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you?
For even sinners do the same.
And if you lend to those from whom you hope to receive back, what credit is that to you?
For even sinners lend to sinners to receive as much back.
But love your enemies, do good, and lend,
		Hoping for nothing in return;
And your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High,
For He is kind to the unthankful and evil.
	Therefore be merciful,
Just as your Father also is merciful.

We Respond by Confessing Our Faith in the Triune God – Nicene Creed
I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of the Father before all worlds: God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made; being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made: Who for us and for our salvation came down from heaven, and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary, and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried; and the third day he rose again according to the Scriptures, and ascended into heaven, and sits on the right hand of the Father. And he shall come again with glory to judge the living and the dead, whose kingdom shall have no end. And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, and Giver of Life, who proceeds from the Father, and the Son; who with the Father and the Son together is worshipped and glorified; who spoke by the prophets. And I believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. I acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. And I look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.
